Now whistlepigs chief blender…

A

Now whistlepigs Chief blender, Meghan Ireland, said “I will put whiskey in any kind of barrel once”. That try anything once approach seems like a great attitude to have, so I figured I’d channel that same energy and enter my first competition. As well as make the first drink I’ve ever designed. I mean, what’s the worst that can happen…

Q

So whistlepigs started when…

A

So whistlepig started when they bought their farm in Vermont in 2007, with production beginning in 2015. They distill 7 days a week and I don’t know about you but frankly that sounds exhausting. So I thought about how they could unwind and came to a typically British conclusion. Now I bet you thought I was going to say get drunk but I have to inform you that this is now a tea party and everyone knows a good tea party requires biscuits. So here’s some I prepared earlier which are going to help me tell you some more about whistlepig and the drink I’m making for you today. They’re black pepper shortbreads which will make sense shortly.

Q

So I’ll start with the first one…

A

So I’ll start with the first one, for my cocktail today I’ve decided to use the piggyback 6yr 100% rye.

(Pour whiskey)There’s 50 ml of the rye in the drink.

When I tried the whiskey I really liked how the spicyness at the beginning was followed by those kinda softer, almost Christmassy spices at the end.

Q

When working out what to pair with the whiskey…

A

When working out what to pair with the whiskey I was inspired by the fact that whistlepigs leadership team is womenlead (the second biscuit) which is a big change from the classic, boys club perception of whiskey. I wanted my cocktail to follow that same trend and shy away from the typical whiskey drinks you’d think of like old fashions or manhattans. Hence the tea party theme.

So since, whistlepig is the most awarded rye whiskey in the world, and the piggyback rye won double gold at the 2020 worlds spirits competition I figured what better to pair it with than golden milk.

Q

Golden milk is…

A

Golden milk is typically a spiced turmeric milk drink and is drunk as a home remedy style thing in a similar way to how you might drink honey and lemon. We want to help the whistlepig distillers recover from their long weeks so I thought it was fitting. The golden milk in this cocktail has turmeric, ginger, vanilla extracts and cloves with a tiny bit of black pepper. The black pepper helps your blood absorb the anti-inflammatory components of turmeric. You can use any type of milk but since whistlepig is distilled in a 150 year old converted dairy farm, I’ve used normal milk.

Offer some to judge.

Q

Sticking with the restorative theme…

A

Sticking with the restorative theme, the final ingredient of my cocktail is a 2:1 blend of coconut water syrup and honey syrup.

(Offer some to judges)

I’ve always found honey in drinks very comforting and the coconut mellows out the earthiness of the turmeric and ginger.

Shake drink, pour.

Q

Now since this contains….

A

Now since this drink contains the piggyback rye, a double gold winning whiskey, and golden milk, I’ve decided to name it after something else that contains gold. So this is called the piggybank.
