- Maturists: pre-1945

Why is there an ageing population?
- Longer life expectancy
- Lower fertility rate
- Baby boomers population bubble
- Migration boom post war
When was the retirement age set historically?
Male retirement age of 65 set in 1909, when average male lifespan was ~58yrs
What is frailty?
- Multidimensional syndrome
- Increased vulnerability to stressor due to reduced capacity of physiological systems
- Associated with increased risk of falls, disability, hospitalisation, mortality, inflammation
What is entropy?
A process of degradation or a trend to disorder
What are the frailty criteria?
3/5 of the following:
- Poor muscle strength
- Slow gait
- Un-intentional wt loss
- Exhaustion
- Sedentary
What tools can be used to assess frailty?
- FRAIL questionnaire
- Clinical frailty scale
What types of interventions can be used to treat frailty?
- Physical
- Nutritional
- Behavioural, social, psychological
How does average number of hospital days change with age?
- 55-64yo: Increases from 24 to 40
- > 64yo: Decreases to 23 days
What is the inverse care law?
Availability of medical care varies inversely with need for it in the population
What are the major factors that determine level of care?
- Management of continence
- Mobility
- Level of assistance in personal care & ADLs
- Behaviour (dementia, supervision requirements)
