Community,ecosystem and biome definition Flashcards
Ecosystem
A reasonably self contained area together with all it’s living organisms.
Microhabitat
A localised specific habitat within a larger habitat.
Biosphere
The part of the planet Earth where life occurs, including land, sea and air.
Abiotic factors
A non-living condition or thing that influences or affects an ecosystem and the organisms within it.
Biotic Factors
A living thing that influences or affects an ecosystem and the organisms within it.
Biomes
A region of the world with a particular climate, animals and plants.
Microclimate
The climate of a very small or restricted area especially when this differs from the climate of the surrounding area.
Community
The living or biotic part of an ecosystem
i.e all the organisms of all the different species living in one habitat.
Habitat
The physical or abiotic part of an ecosystem.
Interspecific Competition
Individuals of a different species compete for the same resources within an ecosystem.
Climate Climax Community
One of the ecological climaxes possible in a particular climatic area whose stability is directly due to the influence of climate.
Climax Community
A community that has reached a steady state.
Edaphic Factors
An abiotic factor relating to the physical or chemical composition of the soil found in a particular area.
Succession
The process by which the structure of a biological community evolves over time.
Intraspecific Competition
Members of the same species compete for limited resources.
