Community Ecology Flashcards
Primary succession
Initial establishment of plant and animal communities on substrates lacking living organisms (ex: bare rock, lava, dunes)
Secondary succession
Change of an established community (ex: ponds and lakes accumulate pollen, leaves)
What does sedaDNA reveal about woolly mammoths?
That woolly mammoths existed 10,000 yr BP which is several thousands of years later than said by macrofossil surveys
Allogenic succession vs autogenic succession
Allogenic succession: abiotic disturbance (non-living thing that has an impact on living things or the environment)
Autogenic succession: biotic disturbance (living thing that has an impact on another population of livings or the environment)
Stochastic events
Largely unpredictable events (ex: lightning strikes or floods)
Facilitation
A species creates favourable conditions for a species but not itself (mutualism)
