Community Ecology Flashcards
What are the interrelationships between living organisms
Feeding Relationships
Competition
Predator/Prey relationship
Symbiotic Relationships
Intra-specific interactions are?
interactions between individuals of the same species
Inter-specific interactions are?
interactions between two or more species
What does the term competition refer to?
The interaction where organisms share an essential common resource (intra-specific and inter-specific competition)
What is intra-specific competition?
Happens between members of the same species
why is intra-specific competition usually more intense?
the species have the same niche and are competing for the same resources
What is inter-specific competition?
Competition between different species inhabiting the same ecological area
Gause’s Principle of Competitive Exclusion states?
No two species can occupy the same ecological niche at the same place in time, as one will exclude the other from a portion of the niche.
Resource Partitioning refers to
the division of limited resources by species to avoid competition in an ecological niche.
What does predation refer to
The direct consumption of all or part of members of one species by a member of another (including plants)
A symbiotic relationship is described as:
A close, long-term relationship between organisms of different species
What are the three types of symbiotic relationships?
Mutualism
Commensalism
parasitism
What is mutualism?
Relationships where both organism benefit from each other
What is commensalism?
Relationship where one organism benefits while the other is unaffected
What is parasitism?
Relationship where one benefits (parasite) while the other is harmed (host)
