“African-Caribbean culture”
Often hear the word community bandied about. Expat community, communities based on ethnicity, ie Indian, Chinese, French etc. Communities based on wealth and ownership, Landed property, Condo, HDB.
Do you view yourself as belonging to any community? Would you define yourself by the community you belong to? Do these communities actually exist or are they just convenient labels to stereotype people?
Singapore is multi-racial and multi-religious. Is it possible to create a supra-community that includes all residents of Singapore?
We find supra-communities in homogeneous societies like Bali where strong societal ties , religion and rituals, create strong bonds between individuals making strong and vibrant communities. Communal events are frequent and attendance is often compulsory.
Do you see this happening in Singapore?
To have strong community. Residents of Singapore must be driven by the right values. Countries that have strong community spirit usually have values of cooperation, common values and some degree of of self sacrifice for the greater good.
Do you think that Singapore and it’s residents are too self-cantered for that . After all Singapore is known to be ultra-competitive and the values that drive that are greed, envy and one-upmanship
What’s your opinion?
Have you said hello and introduced yourself to all your neighbours?
