Definition of a multicultural community
A community made up of people from many different cultural or ethnic groups
Definition of ethnic minority
A small group of people in a country e.g Indians in Britain
Ethnic groups in the UK
White, Black Carribbean, Black African, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Chinese
What does it mean to be British
Shared culture, shared history, language, having a passport, having rights, common habits, geographical boundary
Definition of Immigration
Moving to another country to live there

Leaving your homeland to live in another country

Open-mindedness and accepting others

A small part of a larger group of people
Why did Jews come to Britain
Jews have been here for hundreds of years. In the 1930s and 40s they cave to escape persecution in East Europe
Why did Africans, Asians and Carribbeans come to Britain
They already belonged to Britain as Britain had taken over their countries. They came here to provide manual and semi skilled work in the 1950s as there was a shortage in Britain
Why did Polish people came to Britain
They came to escape Nazi Germany in the 1940s
Benefits of living in a multicultural society
Bring in a lot of money (immigrants contribute £5 billion to the economy)
23% of Britain’s doctors were born overseas
New food e.g. Chinese
New skills and ideas in art, music, sport, dance and literature

Race, religion, food, background, culture, dress and language

People with parents who have different backgrounds

Some people are racist and want to keep communities apart

Treating people unfairly because if their race/gender/religion/ body

Issues in Northern Ireland
Most Protestants want to remain part of the UK whilst most Catholics want to be part of The Republic of Ireland. There is a lot of mistrust between the 2 communities
Is discrimination illegal
Yes. There are 3 anti-discrimination laws
Sex discrimination act
Stops women from being treated unfairly
The race relations act
Makes it an offence to treat a person differently because of their race, colour, nationality or origin
The Disability Discrimination act
This means that services should be available for disabled people e.g. Cinemas must have wheelchair ramps, deaf people should be given a videophone at work.
What happens if a person is discriminated against
They can go to court and are entitled to compensation
