Communities 4.7.1.1 Flashcards
What is an organism?
An individual
What is population?
The number of a particular species living in a habitat.
What is community?
Lots of different populations living in a habitat
What is ecosystem?
The interaction of a community of living organisms with the non-living organisms parts of their environment
Define interdependence?
Within a community each species depends on other species for survival.
What do plants compete for?
- Light
- Space
- Water
- Mineral ion
- Soil
What do animals compete for?
- Food
- Mates
- Habitat
- Water
Define stable community?
Where all the species and environmental factors are in balance so that sizes remain fairly constant
Define predator?
An organism that hurts another for its food.
Define prey?
An organism that is hunted by predators for food. Not always herbivores
Define competition?
Where organisms are trying to obtain the same thing from their habitat e.g. 2 flower species trying to get light and space
