What is communism?
Communism is a theory about how to to organise society that was dreamt up by a German man called Karl Marx. He believed that, like human beings themselves, society was evolving.
What did Marx believe in?
He believed that when workers took control of society then everyone would be equal (men and women) and everything would be shared. There would be no different classes, no very rich people or very poor. There would be no private property and the government would run games and factories and stores for the benefit of all people. There would be no need for money as the government would provide everything to everybody that they needed and all people would lead the same simple lives. Marx believed that the whole world would eventually live under the communist sytsem.
How did Russia become a communist country?
The first country in the whole world to become communist was Russia. After the first world war, nearly 2 million Russians soldiers were killed and there were massive food shortages in the cities. In 1917 ordinary Russians who believed in the communist way of life rebelled against their king, Tsar Nicholas ll. After a bitter civil war, the entire Russian Royal Family was killed and Russia officially became a communist country.
