Communications and The internet Flashcards
What is a network
A network is a number of computers linked together to allow them to share resources
Name the two main network
LAN and WAN
Define LAN
Local area network
Covers a small area like home, school or building site
Define WAN
Wide area network
Covers a large geographical area
It’s separates LANs over a large geographical area to form a network of networks
What is the data speeds measured in
Bits per second
What is the internet
The internet is a collection of inter-connected networks on which the ‘world wide web’ runs on
What is the World Wide Web
WWW is a collection of all the webpages in the internet
What are webpages
All of the associated files, sounds, image files that are stored on the server. These server are accused with a unique address
What does URL mean
Uniform resource locator
What does DNS mean
Dominate name system which transfers your URL files into correct ID address
Explain why business would use a WAN rather than a LAN
Because WANS are a much wider networks, computers in a WAN can communicate with computers and users in other locations
WAN networks can be managed by several different people
In a client-server network there are two types of computers name them
File servers
Client workstation
Explain file servers
Computers which control access and manage the network
Explain Client workstation
Computers which allow users to run applications and to acres the server and also networks resources, such as printers
Which network has only one type of computer
Peer-peer
Explain why there is no server in a peer-peer network
There is no server to manage the network all the computers are connected together equally
Explain why in a peer-to peer network the computers are all connected together equally
There are all equal and can communicate with each other directly without having to go through a server
In a client-server network how are services connected to the client
Clients connect to the server by using a their network addresses to access their services programs and data stored on them
What is a server response for the client
Servers are responsible for network security by allocating login names and passwords to users
We’re are files served in a client-server network
All files are held on the servers and can be backed up centrally
Is there a server in a peer-to-peer network
No,each client can act as a server. Other clients can share programs, data, and printer
Where is the data stored in a client network
Data is stored on each client and not centrally
Each user is responsible for backing up each client
State two types of cable that can be used to network computers
Copper wire
Fibre optic cable
How do devices on a network communicate
Through cables(wired)or radio waves(wireless)
