What is the internet?
A collection of inter-collected networks
Describe internet growth?
1969 - 4 networks connected to the internet
1989 - 100000 networks connected to the internet
2012 - 2.1 billion people were internet users
2020 - More than 50 billion things be connected to the network
What two devices are needed to connect to the network?
Modem - connect to your ISP
Router - Provides access to a local area network
Describe a modem in more detail?
It is needed to convert the digital signal from the computer to an analogue signal used by telephone lines
Describe a router in more detail?
A device that allows you to connect and other devices to a single connection,in a home network
Many routers incorporate a wireless access point
What is a TCP protocol?
- Breaks up messages sent over the internet into small chunks called packets
- Reassembles the packets at the other end
- Detects errors
- Resends lost messages
What is a IP protocol?
Routes the individual packets
What is the HTTP?
Is used for accessing and receiving web pages in the form of HTML files on the internet
What is the HTTPS?
Encrypts the information so it cannot be hacked
What is an IP address?
Every computer and other device connected to the internet has a IP address
Packets are labelled with the sender’s and the destination IP adresses
What is a DNS system?
DNS technology allows you to type a name such as ‘google.co.uk’ into your web browser
What is MAC addressing?
Media access control is assigned to each network interface card (NIC) by the manufacturer
What does WAN stand for?
Wide area network
What does LAN stand for?
Local area network
