Include the tone, pitch, and pacing of your voice
Paraverbal Messages
A brief, succinct statement reflecting the content of the speaker’s message.
Paraphrasing
A statement, in a way that conveys understanding, of the feeling that the listener has heard
Reflecting Feeling
A statement of the main ideas and feelings to show understanding.
Summarizing
Asking open questions to gain information, encourage the speaker to tell her story, and gain clarification.
Questioning
Received message is paraphrased back to the sender to verify the correct message was decoded
Active Listening
Verbal or nonverbal messages that block communication
Roadblock
Nonverbal communication that includes unconscious body movements, gestures, and facial expressions that accompany verbal messages
Body Language
Questions that encourage verbalization and response; questions that seek a response beyond a simple yes or no
Open-Ended Questions
