Why are all aspects of the communication process studied and important? and what are the factors
The aspects all have a hand in effecting the message!
Factors:
1. Sender and receiver characteristics
2/ Encoding and decoding processes
3. Noise
4. Feedback
5. Context
What are sender and receiver characteristics? And how do they influence
*Some already have pre-existing theories of communication: ‘Implicit Theories of Communication.
*Background and Personality
*A person’s perception
*Emotional state
*History of the relationship
What are ‘Implicit Theories’?
Unconscious assumptions of how you should communicate.
What does sending and decoding refer to?
Meaning is constructed from the thoughts in our mind and another’s interpretation
Can a message be taken back?
No, it cannot be reversed. Unless efforts are made for confrontation.
What does noise refer to?
Interferences in communication.
Not necessarily audible
-External: sights and sounds
-Internal: thoughts and feelings
-Semantic: Emotional reactions or distractions of symbols
What does ‘feedback’ refer to? And in which communication model was it finally introduce?
The receiver responding, in which the sender can evaluate the effectiveness of their message.
Feedback was introduced in the second communication model.
Why does miscommunication happen?
A misalignment in the explicit and implicit meaning presented between sender and receiver.
When does feedback occur?
Anytime. It doesn’t necessarily have to occur after the message is sent.
As encouragement for a timid presence. Feedback on a dismissive attitude.
What does context refer to?
A ‘time and place’ in which communication occurs.
