What is situated communication?
Situated communication happens in a particular environment or socio cultural context
What is relational communication?
When you take into account the type of people you are speaking to and the purpose of the communication
What is transactional communication?
Communication is a two way street you must adapt to one another as the conversation progresses
What are some barriers to effective communication?
- noise
- channel overload
- information overload
- semantic interference
- emotional interference
- written work is not edited
How can you overcome communication barriers?
- be purposeful
- be a good reader and listener
- be context sensitive
- be proactive
What are proxemics?
how close or far away the person you are talking to is, and how it impacts how you get your message across
What are chronemics?
- your use of time
- how punctual you are
- your ability to listen for long periods of time
- pace of conversation
- how the message is received
What are vocalics?
Non-verbal qualities; crying, yelling, volume or slang
What are kinesics?
Body language; facing the person you are talking to, eye contact, posture, facial expressions, etc.
What is upward communication flow?
Movement of info from subordinates → superiors
- Important to create a working climate where opinions and ideas can be shared freely with all people in a workplace
What is downward communication flow?
Movement of info from superiors → subordinates
- used to clarify strategy, policy or expectations as well as boost moral and instill a feeling of loyalty
What is horizontal communication flow?
Movement of info that enables at the same level to share ideas
What is ethnocentrism?
The tendency to make false assumptions based on the limited experience that one’s own culture or ethinic group is superior to others
What is high culture context?
Communication relies heavily on non-verbal, contextual and shared cultural meanings
What is low culture context?
Meaning is created through the literal content of the message, rather than how it is said
