communication modes and devices Flashcards
communication modes
a way a person communicates with each other
-some modes are dependent on HL
-parents should act fast to decide what they want to do for their child
continuum of communication modalities
A-V
-from fully auditory to fully visual
-what are the goals for the child
american sign language
manual system of communication expressed by the hands
-learning a full language with its own grammar and vocab
-signs represent concepts
-parents generally are hearing parents and may not understand ASL
cued speech
uses phonetically based hand gestures to supplement speechreading
-auditory and visual
-eight hand shapes and six locations on the face
-hand = consonants
-face = vowels
-assist in understanding visemes in words
simultaneous/total communication
combines use of sign and speech
-signs follow english grammar and are signed at the same time of which are spoken language
-provides visual model when subtle clues in spoken language are not easily heard
-need a consistent, fluent model for spoken language and sign language
aural/oral
uses will speak orally and understand messages with speechreading abilities
-may rely on speechreading (pro and con)
-questions regarding if distorted sound from residual hearing is a good basis for established language
multi sensory approach
auditory and oral
unisensory approach
auditory only
auditory-verbal approach
emphasizes the use of audition over vision for the learning of speech and language, and stipulated that a child make habitual and optimal use of amplification or electrical stimulation
-auditory only
-considered to be a way of life
-expectations are to respond to sound and use it in the same ways as normal hearing children
-families need to be committed to this mode
hearing aids
-used for mild, moderate, moderately-sever, severe, profound HL
-conductive, mixed or SNHL
-devices are worn outside of the head and sound is funneled into the ear canal
bone anchored hearing aid (BAHA)
-used for mild, moderate, moderately-severe HL
-conductive for outer ear abnormalities
-mixed for outer and middle ear abnormalities
-devices are worn on the head behind the ear
cochlear implant
-used for severe and profound HL
-SNHL
-internal device that is implanted behind ear with an electrode array that funnels into the cochlea
hearing assistive technology system (HAT)
sometimes a FM system, digital modulation, bluetooth, infrared, tele-coil
what communication mode is used the most in the US
aural/oral
what to know about communication decision over time
they can change
-depending on the goals of the family and what works for them, the mode will most often change
