0-6 months
vegetative sounds such as cooing and crying, may vocalize some vowels
6-12 months
True babbling begins at 6 months. Babbling can be CV or VC. First word emerges at 12 mo. old with the intention to communicate.
Marginal Babbling
occurs at 6 mo. may be CV or VC combination
Reduplicated Babbling
occurs 6-8 months; CVC alternation, babababa
Variegated Babbling/ Non Reduplicated
8-10 months; alternation of consonants and vowels in a non repetitive manner, such as bagada
Jargon
10-12 months; strings of syllables that mimic adult intonation
12-18 months and MLU
First word emerges. Should have 5-20 words at this stage. Primarily nouns. Does some echolalia. MLU = 1.0-2.0
18-24 months and MLU
language explosion, knows many more words. 2/3 words should be understandable to others. Volume and pitch are not well controlled. Responds to commands. MLU 2.0 range
24- 36 months and MLU
Knows chief body parts. Uses primarily verbs. About 900-1,000 words at this point. MLU 2.5-3.0
48 months and MLU
Has acquired most vowels, diphthongs, some consonants. Simple commands should be very easy as well as following directions. MLU = 3.75 - 4.5
60 months and MLU
Starts using more adjectives and adverbs. Syntax should be fairly good. Should know their own age when asked. MLU = 4.5+

Not babbling
Red Flag at 18 mo.
Not a single word, less than 5 single words
Red Flag at 24 mo.
Less than 10 single words.
Red Flag at 36 mo.
less than 200 single words.
Red Flag at 48 mo.
fewer than 600 single words.
