Communication + Informatics Flashcards

What is communication?
any means of exchanging information or feelings between two or more individuals; a basic component of human relationships
What does face to face communication involve?
A sender, a message, a receiver, and a response or feedback
What are the modes of communication?
Verbal communication, nonverbal communication, electronic communication, written communication
Pace and Intonation
The pace or rhythm and intonation in which it is delivered. Intonation or inflection can express excitement, joy, anger, sadness, or amusement. The pace or tempo of speech may indicate interest, boredom, anxiety, or fear.
Simplicity
Simplicity of speech refers to using commonly understood words in a way that promotes understanding for the person receiving the information. The use of non-medical verbiage.
Clarity and Brevity
The use of clarity, saying exactly what is meant, and brevity, using the fewest words needed to convey the message, results in a clear and simple message.
Timing and Relevance
Relevance: the message being delivered should relate to the person or interests of the person receiving it and requires nurses to be sensitive to a patient’s needs and concerns
Timing: the timing needs to be appropriate to guarantee that the words are heard and understood.
Adaptability
Nurses must alter spoken messages in response to behavioral cues from the patient. This adjustment is referred to as adaptability.
Credibility
is the quality of being trustworthy, truthful, and reliable; being honest, consistent, and dependable
Humor
Humor can be used to help patients find a brief emotional release during difficult or painful situations.
Nonverbal communication
body language; nonverbal behaviors are less consciously controlled than verbal behavior; Nonverbal communication has the ability to either support (congruence) or contradict (incongruence) what is expressed verbally
Patients with Altered Thought Processes
altered thought processes; Their nonverbal communication may or may not be congruent with what they are trying to express.
Benefits of electronic communication
Additional benefits of email include increased efficiency, strengthened patient–provider communications, and informed decision making.
Disadvantages of electronic communication
The main disadvantage of electronic communications methods is the heightened risk to patient confidentiality; Another disadvantage is one of socioeconomics. Not everyone has a computer or a cell phone capable of accessing the internet.
When Not to Use Electronic Communications Media
Information must be communicated urgently. Diagnostic findings are abnormal. Information to be relayed is highly confidential.
