What is the opening question?

A

A question that identifies the problem that a patient wishes to address.
Listen to their opening statement without interrupting.

How should you target your questions?

A

Use open questions first (story telling).
Use closed questions for more specific details.
Investigate red flag symptoms, and clarify unclear sections.

What are leading questions?

A

A question that subtly prompts the respondent to answer in a particular way.
Undesirable, as they restrict speech.
They can be assumptive or presumptive.

What is signposting?

A

Progresses the consultation from one section to another, explaining the reasoning and what to expect. It allows for sharing thoughts and asking for consent.

Introduction –> information collecting.
Open questions –> closed questions.
Difference parts of the history.
Into the physical examination.
Into explanation and planning.

How do you close a consultation?

A

Signpost the rest of the consultation.
Quickly summarise.
Move on to the clinical examination, where an introduction is appropriate.
Be concise and avoid medical jargon.
