Communication Defined (Lecture #1) Flashcards
Linear Model
Sender > Message > Channel > Receiver
Sender
Encodes
Where the message came from
The source
Encode
Sender translating the message in a way fro the receiver to understand
Message
The symbols we transfer from sender to others
Can be either verbal or nonverbal
Channel
How a message gets across from a sender to receivers
Can be visual and/or auditory
Different ways of channels
Face-to-face
Mediated (through technology)
Noise:
Anything that happens during the communication process that interferes with the understanding
*Can take place in many forms
Types of Noise:
Semantic
Physical/Environmental
Psychological
Physiological
Semantic Noise
Related to the words and language
Usually from senders
Speaking a different language, etc.
Physical/Environmental Noise
Any external stimuli that interfere with understanding the message
EX. The way we dress, people chatting, etc
Psychological Noise
Usually stems from receiver
Mental interference that distracts listeners
Thinking about something else while someone else is speaking
Not fully concentrated
Stereotypes and assumptions
Physiological Noise
Any factors that are related to your body
EX. stomach growling because you’re hungry and it interferes with attention
Receiver
Decodes
The person who gets the message
The audience
Decode
The way a receiver understands the message
Interaction Model of Communication
Same as linear but both sender and receiver are senders and receivers
