Intrapersonal Barriers
Barriers unique to each individual that is a result of assumptions, expectations, prejudices & stereotypes
Halo Effect
A manifestation of intrapersonal barriers that ascribes positive characteristics (and dismisses negative ones) to a person based on a positive first impression
Horn Effect
One negative characteristic is perceived in a first impression and establishes a negative bias towards all actions by a person
Physical Barriers
Visible and tangible barriers that prevent proper communication due to environmental conditions
Interpersonal Barriers
Communication difficulties between people
eg. language
Ethnocentrism
Thinking one’s own culture is superior to others and other cultures are inferior
Semantic Barriers
Where meaning is present or absent in the language used
Denotative Meaning
Meaning of words created by people. Some words have multiple meanings and may change over time
Minimising communication barriers
- Control the physical environment
- use appropriate language
- challenge own personal assumptions and predispositions
- take an action role in communication process
Empathy (as a strategy)
is the ability to feel what another person feels to understand their point of view
-interpersonal barriers minimised as attempt made to understand different perspective
-semantic barriers reduced by choosing words with care
-physical barriers prevented to arrange a better place to communicate
Redundancy (as a strategy)
Repeating messages to overcome semantic barriers without over repeating to ensure effective delivery
