Non-verbal communication
Includes any form of communication that does not rely on spoken or written words to convey a message. Such as use of visuals, colour, graphics.
Communication
Is the exchange of information between people, such as sending and receiving of messages.
Formal communication
Making use of the official communication channels of a business.
Sideway communication
Involves the flow of information between people of similar status or position.
External communication
Is concerned with how a business communicates with and is viewed by other businesses and stakeholders outside the business.
-Suppliers
Developing and maintaining good communication with suppliers is important as these companies provide the goods and services necessary for a business to operate.
-customers
Every business wants to communicate information to its customers about itself and its products. To achieve this, a variety of physical and symbolic messages can be used.
Body language
Is the use of gestures, facial exposure and posture to communicate. A smile, a glance, they all communicate a meaning.
Visual communication
Is the use of symbols to communicate
- a brand symbol or logo is a graphical representation that identifies a business product.
Media richness
Describes the ability of a communication method to best convey a message. Rich methods include:
- meeting
- committee
- face to face conversation
- interview
- body language
Communication barriers
Are anything that distorts or interrupts the message and its meaning such as jargon, discriminatory language.
Jargon:
sometimes words cannot be understood because they are too technical.
Discriminatory language:
Sexist, racist or other words that discriminate against any group of people will block effective communication.
Negative language:
Negative statements or words can create problems in communication. Expression such as ‘whatever’ can discourage people from offering further suggestions.

Filtering:
Occurs when a sender manipulates information so the receiver will see it more favourably.
Improper attitude:
Am improper attitude adopted by a manager when sending a message will be a barrier to effective communication.
Information overload:
Is an excess of information causing the reader to become overwhelmed and confused.
Ethical communication
Means that the information conveyed meets our standards of what we consider right or acceptable behaviour.
Unethical communication
When a business attempts to cut corners, stretch the truth or blatantly lie. Unethical communication can often include:
-Plagiarism:
Copying another persons work.
- Making false, exaggerated or misleading statements to or about others.
- misusing communication channels- such as Facebook.
Illegal communication
I’m Australia, there are laws that protect the rights of consumers and employees and other stakeholders. The Australia communications and media authority (ACMA) is designed to ensure ethical communications behaviour.
Advantage and disadvantage of
- media release
Advantages:
- is inexpensive to prepare and implement, goes directly to the people the company wants to communicate with.
- sent to a large number of people at same time.
Disadvantages:
- media releases may be received but not read. In today’s fast paced business world, workers and managers are inundated with information via email.

Effective communication
Occurs when the message received and understood is the same as the sender intended the message to be.
Businesses with effective communicators are more likely to maximise returns because they are more likely to engage their employees and invest in training.
