What is Piagets pre operational stage?
Differentiates self from others and object
Experiments with behaviors
Objects have characteristics (can imitate and substitute and play) - animism
— repetition
— short, concrete terms
— no reasoning (unable to reason at this age)
What are some toddler key points?
1) signature phrase is no
2) offer choices, make sure the choices are viable, for example “ do you want to take the pink medicine or the white medicine first?” NOT “ do you want to take your medicine now or later?”
3) rituals are very important
4) use the five senses to explain things (what it will look, sound, smell, feel, and taste like)
5) They are very literal, so watch your words
What is the initiative vs Guilt stage?
Likes to please, others, eager to learn
Initiates many activities, but never finishes
Feels the sense of accomplishment when successful which leads to self-confidence
-offer choices
-Tell them how to cooperate
-Let them handle equipment
-Get on eye level
What does the industry vs inferiority stage consist of?
1) interested in how things
2) initiates activities, but now sees them through
3) competency/mastery in the goal
4) increased interaction with peers
-Reassure
-Treat as a person
-third person speech (“some kids say this medicine tastes bad”)
What does Piaget concrete operations consist of ?
1) able to view the world from another point of view
2) can think through actions
3) no abstract thinking
4) classifies into different sets (collections)
5) conservation
-prepare for procedures
-Simple, concrete terms
-be specific
What does the identity versus role confusion stage consist of?
1) developing own sense of self
2) exploration of personal, professional, and social roles (adult vs child)
3) revisiting previous stages
4) interaction with peers is KEY
-privacy and confidentiality
-Give respect
-give feedback
What does the formal operations stage consist of?
1) abstract, logical, organized thinking
2) thinks about problems from all views and can rank solutions
-ask what they know and start from there
-Ease into discussions
-Avoid detailed discussions; they still need simple explanations, and will be afraid to ask for clarification
-Use assuming language (“ how many cigarettes do you smoke?” Instead of “ do you smoke?”)
