What is Social Networking?
sites that connect people and organizations that share a common interest or activity
Common features of Social Networking include?
- Profiles or pages
- Groups and Friends
- News Feed
- Share Settings
What are profiles or pages?
Allows you to share information about yourself or your business
What are Groups and Friends?
the other members on social media that you will communicate with
What is a News feed?
the first page you see after logging into a social networking site
-recent posts, trending topics, advertisements
What are Share settings?
determine who can see your posts
-sharing with everyone, just friends, or just a subset of friends
What are Blogs?
personal websites to keep in touch with friends and family
-some are like online diaries
-buisnesses, newspapers, and others use blogs as a quick publishing method
What are microblogs?
allows an individual or company to share posts with an audience
-uses short sentences
-X (formerly Twitter) allows 280 characters per tweet. IG primarily shares images and videos
What are Podcasts?
audio programs delivered over the Internet
-typically a podcast is one audio program in a series of related podcasts
What is a Wiki?
a website designed to allow visitors to use their browsers to add, edit, or delete the site’s content.
-Wikipedia is most popular
There are 3 different messaging systems. What are they?
- Text messaging (texting/SMS)
- Instant messaging (IM)
- Email (most widely used)
What is text messaging?
process of sending short electronic messages typically fewer than 160 characters
-also known as texting and SMS (short message service)
What is Instant Messaging (IM)?
supports live communication between friends
-most instant messaging programs also include videoconferencing, features, file sharing, and remote assistance. ex) Microsoft Teams, slack
What is E-Mail (electronic mail)?
transmission of electronic messages
What are the two basic types of email systems?
- Client-based e-mail systems
- Web-based e-mail systems
What are Client-based e-mail systems?
require a special program known as an e-mail client to be installed on your computer
ex) Microsoft Outlook, apple mail
What are Web-based e-mail systems?
-use webmail clients located on the e-mail provider’s computer. Known as webmail
-do not require an e-mail program to be installed on the computer
A typical e-mail has 3 elements. What are they?
- Header (including address, subject, and perhaps attachment)
- Message
- Signature
What is spam?
unwanted and unsolicited e-mail that may include a computer virus or destructive programs often attached to unsolicited email
What is a spam blocker?
programs that identify and eliminate spam
