Communication Flashcards
Define Communication
-Transmitting and receiving data in electromagnetic signals
Define Synchronous Transmission
- Bits transferred over channel at constant rate
- Synchronised by clock signal
Define Asynchronous Transmission
-Transmitted when available
(Transmission Channel can be idle)
-Start and Stop Bits
Define Serial Transmission
-Data sent in sequence over a single wire
Define Parallel Transmission
- Several bits sent at the same time
- Short Distances
Parallel vs Serial Transmission
- Crosstalk: Electromagnetic interference between wires results in corrupted data
- Skew: bits transmitted at different speeds
-Serial uses less wires, no skew or crosstalk
Define Bit rate
Number of bits transmitted over a channel each second
baud rate x number of bits per signal change
Define Baud Rate
Number of times signal changes per second
When is Bit rate different to Baud rate
- Broadband transmission supports multiple frequency bands and voltage levels
- Signal change can represent more than one bit
Define Bandwidth
Maximum rate of data transfer of a channel
Directly proportional with bit rate
Define latency
Delay between sending and receiving signal
Define Protocol
Set of rules that determine the communication between devices
