Communicable Diseases- Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is an infection?
A condition that occurs when pathogens in the body multiply and damage body cells
What is a virus?
It is a piece of genetic material surrounded by a protein coat.
How does a virus spread?
Once a virus has penetrated a cell, it begins to multiply. The new viruses burst out of the cell and starts taking over other cells. As the virus multiplies and spreads, disease sets in, and the body’s immune system jumps into action.
What is a communicable disease? (aka contagious or infectious disease)

What is bacteria?

What is toxins?
Substances that kill cells or interfere with their functions.
What is fungi?
Plantlike organisms that can cause diseases of the lungs, the mucous membranes, and the skin.
What is protozoa?
Single-celled microorganisms that are larger and more complex than bacteria.
What is Rickettsia?
Resemble bacteria, often enter the body through insect bites.
How do diseases spread?
Direct contact, indirect contact, and airborne transmission
Define how diseases are directly contacted.
Through direct contact with an infected person
Define how diseases are contacted indirectly
Through contaminated objects, vectors, and contaminated food and water
What is a vector?
An organism that carries and transmits pathogens to humans or other animals
