Communicable diseases Flashcards
What is health?
A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being
What is a communicable disease?
A disease which can be spread from person to person
What is a disease causing microorganism called?
pathogen
What are the 4 types of pathogen?
Bacteria, fungi, virus, protist
Which type of pathogen causes cholera?
bacteria
Which type of pathogen causes tuberculosis?
bacteria
Which type of pathogen causes chalara ash dieback?
fungi
Which type of pathogen causes malaria?
protist
Which type of pathogen causes HIV?
virus
Which type of pathogen causes helicobacter stomach ulcers?
bacteria
Which type of pathogen causes ebola?
virus
How is cholera spread?
dirty water
How is tuberculosis spread?
airborne
How is chalara ash dieback spread?
airborne
How is malaria spread?
mosquito vector
How is helicobacter stomach ulcers transmitted?
oral transmission
How is ebola transmitted?
body fluids
How is chlamydia spread?
sexually transmitted infection
What happens during the lytic pathway of a virus lifecycle?
Inside a cell, the virus replicates DNA and protein coats which form new viruses. This causes the host cell to burst, infecting nearby cells
What happens during the lysogenic pathway of a virus lifecycle?
The genome of a virus is injected into a cell and becomes integrated into the host cell DNA. As the host cell replicates its DNA, the virus DNA is also replicated.
How can scientists identify diseases in plants?
By examining symptoms, by testing for pathogens, by eliminating other causes of damage and by examining the distribution of plant diseases
