Communicable Diseases Flashcards
Explain measles
Measles is a virus spread by coughing and sneezing. Symptoms include fever and a red skin rash and can be fatal if complications arise
Explain HIV
HIV is a virus that destroys your immune system unless controlled by antiretroviral drugs. Late stage HIV infection (or AIDS) is when the immune system is so damaged it cannot fight against other infections. It is spread through sexual contact or bodily fluid
Explain tobacco mosaic virus
It is a plant virus which causes a “mosaic” pattern of discolouration on affected leaves. This affects growth due to lack of photosynthesis
Explain salmonella
It is a bacteria ingested in poorly-prepared food. Symptoms include fever, cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea caused by toxins secreted by the bacteria
Explain gonorrhoea
Gonorrhoea is an STD with symptoms of a thick discharge from the genitals and pain when urinating. It’s cause by bacteria but can be controlled by antibiotics or a barrier method of contraception e.g condoms
Explain rose black spot
It is a fungal disease where dark spots develop on affected leaves, turning yellow and dropping early. It affects growth as photosynthesis is reduced. It is spread by the environment through wind or water. It can be treated with fungicides or removing affected leaves
Explain malaria
Malaria is caused by protists, whose life cycle includes the mosquito. It causes recurring episodes of fevers and can be fatal. The spread of malaria can be controlled by not allowing the vectors (mosquitos) to breed or using nets to avoid being bitten
