Communicable Diseases Flashcards
White blood cell, such as a B cell or a helper T cell helps fight pathogens
Lymphocyte
The group of organs including the lymph nodes ,spleen that fights off pathogens and removes harmful organisms from the blood
Immune system
A type of white blood that produces antibodies
B cell
A protein that fights infection
Anti-body
A white blood cell that signals B cells to produce antibodies
Helper T cell
A type of white blood cell that surrounds and destroys pathogen
Macrophage
The body’s resistance against infectious diseases
Immunity
Substance containing dead or weakened pathogens that cause the body to make antibodies for a specific disease causing agent
Vaccine
Disease causing bacterium
Fungus, virus, or Protozoa
Pathogen
Disease caused by infectious agent or it’s toxins that occurs through the direct or indirect transmission of the infectious agent
Communicable diseases
Single celled often beneficial microorganisms, some of which can cause diseases, such as syphilis, by releasing toxins
Bacteria
Single celled, tiny organisms that produce disease causing toxin and cause diseases such as malaria and dysentery
Protozoa
A small infectious agent that replicates only inside the living cells of other organisms
Virus
Highly contagious respiratory infection caused by a virus
Influenza or the flu
Most common bacterial STD in the USA, often occurs with no symptoms, spread by sexual contact
Chlamydia
