Communicable diseases Flashcards
1
Q
What is a Pathogen?
A
- an organism that causes disease
- e.g. bacteria, viruses, fungi, protocista
2
Q
what is a Communicable Disease?
A
A disease that can spread between organisms by pathogens
3
Q
Describe how Bacteria act as pathogens
A
- release toxins that damage host cells and tissues
- or enter host cells, prevent them from functioning normally
4
Q
What are toxins?
A
- chemicals which damage host cells and tissue
- leading to symptoms of disease
5
Q
Viruses
A
- non living
- have attachment proteins to allow virus to attach to host cells
- pass through cell memebrane to reproduce using enzymes of host cell
- prevent host cell from functioning normally
(can lead to death of host cells)
6
Q
Fungi
A
- release enzymes and digest materials to get nutrients
- products of digestion are absorbed back into fungal cell
- digestion causes damage to host cells and tissues
- when reproducing, release spores to spread disease widely
7
Q
Tuberculosis
A
- Bacteria
- Animals (humans and cattle)
7
Q
Protoctista
A
- single-celled organism
- act as pathogenic parasites
