Q

Industrialism, capitalism, urbanization liberal democracy

A

Industrial revolution which started in the late 18th century transformed Britain and later other societies from economists based likely on agriculture to economics based likely on manufacturing. New technology led to massive increase in productivity, first in cotton industries and other industries.

Closely related to the development of industrialism was the development of capitalism. Capitalism involves wages, labour and businesses run for the purpose of making profit.

The development of industries was accomplished by massive movements from rural areas to urban areas. Urbanism, meaning the growth of towns and cities, brought with it, numerous social problems such as crime, riot and health problems caused by over crowding and lack of sanitation.

t is opposed to monarchical reign where the kings are regarded as god’s representatives on earth and are above any form of challenge or questioning. In liberal democracy, emphasis is placed on citizen’s right. The individuals were to have a say in how their countries were governed/ruled rather than accepting what their monarchs told them. This opened a new way for the development of political parties and a new perspective of the society.

Q

Functionalism

A
  • This was propounded by a French philosopher, Emile Durkheim. The theory holds that, for the society to be understood properly, every segment or part forming it must be closely examined. In other words, each of the parts forming the society must be studied with other parts for a proper understanding of the society as a whole. Thus, every part of the society functions in relationship with other parts
17
Q

Marxism

A

It took a radical change different from functionalism. The word, “marxism” is derived from the founder, Karl Marx, a German philosopher, economist and sociologist. He believed that every human in the society must labour for the good of the society and by extension, for the good of himself/herself. In other words, man must collectively have means of production and work towards the success of the society.

18
Q

Interactionism

A

It posits/suggests that individuals interact with one another in the society and meanings are derived from interactions of indiviuals.

19
Q

Feminism

A

The thrust or central focus of feminism is the exploitation of women in the society. The theory altogether underscores movement against the oppression and domination of womenfolk in the society. Virtually all versions of feminism agree on one theme which is, “the domination and discrimination against women in all spheres of life”. However, not all are in agreement with what exactly is responsible for this in the society.

The versions of feminism as a theory are;

1) Radical feminism.
2) Black feminism.
3) Marxist and socialist feminism.
4) Liberal feminism.

20
Q

Post modernism

A

Post modernists have two main positions upon which they base post modernism. First, some post modernists argue that social behaviour is no longer shaped as it used to be by people’s background and socialization. They also argue that factors such as class, gender and ethnicity influence people a great deal less than they used to. Hence, people are much freer to choose their own identity and lifestyle.
