Comms 13 - 14 - Routine HF Radiotelephony Procedures Flashcards
Review Questions
What is the purpose of message formats?
Ensures standardization amongst all communicators
Ensures the necessary information is contained within the message
Allows for quick and easy drafting of messages
Review Questions
What is the timeline for precedent levels?
ROUTINE -Start of next business day
PRIORITY - 6 hours
IMMEDIATE - 1 hour
FLASH - Within 10 mins
What are the six Common Airmanship Principles
- Know what you are going to stay before transmitting
- Listen out before transmitting, prevents stepping on other’s traffic
- Keep voice at normal or slower conversation speed
- Keep your voice at a normal pitch, systems designed to work with normal speech
- Keep microphone close to lips, reduces background noise
- Never use profane or abusive language
What is a Q code?
Civilian bodies govern the meaning
What is a Z code?
Allied military assigned codes
A Multiple call is used to address multiple stations, how would the stations reply?
Stations reply in order called, normally alphabetic/ numeric
During a Multiple call, if a station does not answer what happens?
The next station waits 5-10 seconds and then continues.
The missed station must then wait until all stations have answered prior to answering.
What is a Collective callsign used for?
Used to address multiple aircraft that have been grouped under one callsign.
Ex. MUPPETS represents the Gonzos
When is the All Stations callsign used?
Used when you are unable to raise a particular ground station and your traffic can be passed through anyone.
When is the Unknown Station callsign used?
Used when you have been unable to copy the callsign of the unit contacting you.
What are the occasions to use spelling? How should the spelling be done?
Place names (when uncommon) People's names Words that can be misinterpreted When asked to do so
Shall be done phonetically
What is the sequence when spelling a word?
State the word
State proword I SPELL
Phonetically spell out word
State word once more
What are Radio Checks used for?
To determine the serviceability of your equipment and the circuit conditions
Outcome of a radio check determines message transmission speed
When is the Radio Check Proword RADIO CHECK used?
To check strength and readability
When is the Radio Check Proword ROGER used?
I have received your last transmission satisfactorily
This implies that reception is loud and clear
When is the Radio Check Proword NOTHING HEARD used?
When no response is heard from the called station
What are the radio check prowords used to report of signal strength?
LOUD GOOD WEAK VERY WEAK FADING
What does the following report of signal strength proword mean:
LOUD
Your signal is strong. Interference will not bother my copying
What does the following report of signal strength proword mean:
GOOD
Your signal is good
What does the following report of signal strength proword mean:
WEAK
I can hear you only with difficulty
What does the following report of signal strength proword mean:
VERY WEAK
I can hear you only with great difficulty
What does the following report of signal strength proword mean:
FADING
At times, signal strength fades to extent that continuous reception cannot be relied upon
What are the radio check prowords used for report of readability?
CLEAR READABLE UNREADABLE DISTORTED WITH INTERFERENCE INTERMITTENT
What does the following report of readability proword mean?
CLEAR
Excellent quality
What does the following report of readability proword mean:
READABLE
Quality good, I can read you
What does the following report of readability proword mean:
UNREADABLE
Quality bad, I can’t read you
What does the following report of readability proword mean:
DISTORTED
Have trouble reading you
What does the following report of readability proword mean:
WITH INTERFERENCE
I have trouble reading you due to interference
What does the following report of readability proword mean:
INTERMITTENT
I have trouble reading you because your signal is intermittent
If sending a position report, what must be true regarding the HF message?
The time of the aircraft position in the Position Report must be no earlier than 10 min prior to the DTG
Regarding all messages, the maximum time late for tx a particular DTG is what?
When a message is originally tx more than 15 mins after the DTG, what must happen?
15 minutes
A new DTG must be assigned to the message
All messages must have a unique what? Why?
A unique DTG, that way you can reference a message without repeating the entire message.
What is the Q code or proword of receipt of a message?
QSL
Regarding all HF messages, no message is considered delivered until?
Until a receipt is obtained, an be in the form of Roger or Readback correct following a coded message
What are two ways to cancel a message after it is sent and during the message itself?
If it has been less than 1 minute since you have sent the message, you can say “CHZ DE G4, cancel my last, OVER”
During the tx, you can say “… disregard this transmission, OUT”
If a message has been completely transmitted and received, and minutes have passed since it was received, how can you cancel it?
You must transmit a new message and cancel the DTG associated with the message you wish cancelled
Ex
CHZ DE G5
[Standard plaindress message header]
= Cancel my DTG 281551Z =
OVER
When an error is made while transmitting, what proword is used and what is it followed by?
CORRECTION, followed by the last word, group., proword or phrase correctly transmitted.
Ex
PROCEED TO POSITION 431
CORRECTION POSITION 4135N … etc
A message which has been recently transmitted and received can be corrected how?
By operator to operator
Ex
CHZ DE G3A, Ref my DTG 122019Z, CORRECTION Latitude 5000N, OVER
True or false
Always pass 4 digits for latitude and 5 digits for longitude.
True
True or false
Numbers shall always been transmitted individually.
False, when standard convection is in place you may use forty five hundred for 4500 ft
What are the standard HF Messages/ Procedures?
Open Watch OUT Position Report Close Watch Lost Comms Phone Patch
Describe Open Watch
It is a procedure to maintain an open communication circuit with an agency for message traffic between a unit and its controlling agency
What are the steps to open watch?
Airborne radio check
SELCAL check (if applicable)
Establish primary and secondary frequency
Sign log to indicate you have opened watch and monitor frequency
What is the Out Message used for?
Sent to tasking authority to indicate that the A/C is airborne. Call includes the actual airborne time and the estimated time of arrival at the destination.
When should the Out Message be sent?
After take-off but before TOC
When should the Position Report be sent?
Position report one hour after the OUT/DEPARTURE message and hourly thereafter
True or false
The hourly requirement for Position Reports is based off the OUT message receipt time (QSL).
True
What is true about Close Watch? Who checks with the tasking authority?
You must ask for permission to Close Watch. The Ground Station will check with the tasking authority before closing the circuit.
Who must you be in contact with before closing watch?
Wing Ops
In the event of communications loss with a ground station, what are the procedures?
- Conduct voice radio check on primary circuit up to three times
- Conduct voice radio check on secondary ciruit up to three times
- Return to primary circuit, wait 15 mins and repeat steps 1 & 2
- If comms are re-established on secondary circuit, a new secondary circuit must be established
- If still unsuccessful, open watch with MACS on most appropriate frequency
- Phone patch or request MACS to call Pipeline (AV 257 - 6965) and advise them their services are no longer needed
What is the Selective Calling System? How does it work?
A HF paging system used to notify aircrew of impending HF transmission from ground station.
The ground station will use a 4 letter code to selectively send a signal on active HF to corresponding A/C
Aircrew will hear a tone on ICS indicating HF comms traffic is inbound
Does CHZ have SELCAL capability?
No
When will students conduct a SELCAL check and with who?
The check will be conducted with TRENTON MILITARY (CHR) during FD1 and F-USA

Review Questions
If the message was “hostile vessel is now advancing to the south east” but you only received “advancing to the south east”, how would you request a repetition?
What would be the response to that request?
CHZ DE G5
IMI AB “advancing”
OVER
