Abrasion
Scrape or rub
Superficial wound often affecting the knees, elbows
Incision
Open injury typically caused by a sharp object causing a straight cut
bleeding can be profuse
Laceration
Open injury that is jagged in nature and caused by a sharp object
Bleeding can be profuse
Emergency Procedures
Apply pressure if bleeding.
Clean and/or flush to remove debris
Apply bandage
Emergency Procedures for Incision
Apply pressure until bleeding is controlled

Apply pressure until bleeding is controlled.
Clean gently.

Apply pressure until bleeding is controlled.
Clean gently.
Apply bandage
Puncture
Open wound that is caused by an instrument that delivers a stab
Usually small with limited bleeding

Apply pressure if bleeding.
Clean and/ or flush to remove debris.
Apply bandage.
Contusion
Closed injury, also known as a bruise
Caused by a blunt- force trauma
Ranges in severity based on that trauma received and the location
Emergency Procedures for Contusion
Apply cold ice pack or ice.
Elevate limb if affected.
Observe for signs of increased intracranial pressure if the head is contused
Concussion
Closed head trauma in which the brain has been jolted or shaken

Measure vital signs.
