Common Terms Flashcards
What is BIOS?
o Basic Input/Output System
What is a SAN?
(STORAGE AREA NETWORK) - is a dedicated network that provides access to consolidated, block level data storage.
What is a NAS?
(network-attached storage) appliance typically uses protocols such as the one associated with the Network File System NFS to operate as a file server, releasing other servers from that responsibility. - benefits include faster data access, easier administration and simplified configuration. Each appliance has its own dedicated storage disks and RAID.
What is NAT?
Network Address Translation (NAT) is a way to map an entire network (or networks) to a single IP address. NAT is necessary when the number of IP addresses assigned to you by your Internet Service Provider is less than the total number of computers that you wish to provide Internet access for.
What is IDS?
An intrusion detection system (IDS) / NIDS is a device or software application that monitors network or system activities for malicious activities or policy violations and produces reports to a management station
What is DMZ?
DMZ or demilitarized zone (sometimes referred to as a perimeter network) is a physical or logical subnetwork that contains and exposes an organization’s external-facing services to a larger and untrusted network, usually the Internet. The purpose of a DMZ is to add an additional layer of security to an organization’s local area network
What is SMB?
Short for Server Message Block, a message format used by DOS and Windows to share files, directories and devices.
What is RAID?
redundant array of independent disks
What is RAID Level 0?
(Striped Disk Array without Fault Tolerance) provides data striping (spreading out blocks of each file across multiple disk drives), but it lacks both fault tolerance and redundancy to improve performance. As a result, if one drive fails then all data in the array is lost.
What is RAID levels?
are different architectures that strike a balance between performance, capacity and tolerance.
What is a Subnet?
A portion of a network that shares a common address component. On TCP/IP networks, subnets are defined as all devices whose IP addresses have the same prefix. For example, all devices with IP addresses that start with 100.100.100. would be part of the same subnet. Dividing a network into subnets is useful for both security and performance reasons. IP networks are divided using a subnet mask.
What is an IP address?
IP address is short for Internet Protocol (IP) address.
An IP address is an identifier for a computer or device on a TCP/IP network. Networks using the TCP/IP protocol route messages based on the IP address of the destination.
What is a Loop back address?
Loopback address is a special IP number (127.0.0.1) that is designated for the software loopback interface of a machine. The loopback interface has no hardware associated with it, and it is not physically connected to a network.
The loopback interface allows IT professionals to test IP software without worrying about broken or corrupted drivers or hardware
What is a Registry?
A database used by the Windows operating system to store configuration information
What is a Client?
client is an application that runs on a personal computer or workstation and relies on a server to perform some operations ( The end user)
