Common Structure Vocabulary Flashcards
What is the center of gravity?
An imaginary line in anything made of matter where the total weight of the object comes together.
What is compression?
Inward pushing from any direction which reduces the size of an object.
What is dynamic/live load?
Anything moving across a structure
Example: vehicle passing across a bridge
What is ergonomics?
The designing of the safety of people around the structure.
What is external force?
A force from the interaction of a human and something else.
What is force?
A push or pull on an object.
What is form?
The shape of a structure.
What is a function?
The job the structure was built to do.
What is gravity?
A force that pulls things towards to ground.
What is internal force?
Forces applied inside of a structure.
What is a load?
Something that can be carried.
What is a point of application?
The exact point that is contacted from force.
What is a plane of application?
The surface (or plane) that is contacted by force.
What is a shear?
A force that destroys some (or all) of the material rubbing against a plane.
What is stability?
How rigid something is.
What is a static load?
A load that never chages weight.
What are structural components?
Parts of a structure.
What is structural faliure?
When over the course of designing and building a structure, something goes wrong and the structure weakens.
What is structural fatigue?
When a structure wears out over the course of time and crumbles.
What is structural stress?
How the structure is resisting desintigration.
What is a structure?
An object that has a purpose.
What is tension?
Two objects pushing or pulling in opposite manner to create strain.
What is torsion?
Twisting.
