- Overfishing of anchovies can have a ripple effect on other marine life. This processing of fish oil can lead to the release of harmful pollutants into the environment
- Rancid fish oil can contain harmful toxins that can damage human health.
- Workers in the fish oil industry are often exposed to dangerous working conditions
- Some companies are catching Juvenile fish which could harm the population in the long term - this is an example of tragedy of the commons as a shared resource, the juvenile fish, is overexploited as individuals act in their own self-interest
- Inefficiencies in managing fish stocks can lead to waste and spoilage
- More sustainable practices need to be implemented: Reducing consumption of fish oil supplements, sourcing fish oil from sustainable fisheries, improving the processing of fish oil to reduce pollution and protecting the rights and safety of workers in the industry
