common operations Flashcards
operations:
1) turning
2) facing
3) threading
4) grooving
5) parting/cutoff
6) drilling
7) reaming
8) boring
9) tapping
turning
tool is fed linearly \ to axis of rotation = reduce diameter
facing
tool is fed radially = flat surface
threading
pointed tool is fed linearly \ to axis of rotation across outside of surface of workpiece; faster feedrate = produce spiral thread around workpiece
grooving
straight edged tool is fed radially into workpiece to a specified depth
parting/cutoff
tool is fed radially into workpiece to centre of workpiece = cut off part at specific length
drilling
drill bit is fed into centre of rotating workpiece on one end = hole
reaming
reamer is fed into centre of workpiece on one end = hole w/ specific finish, size & tolerance
drilling must be done first
boring
single point cutting tool is fed linearly \ to axis of rotation on inside diameter of existing hole in workpiece;
care = ensure existing hole is larger than boring tool
drilling must be done first
tapping
tapping tool used to cut surface of hole = internal threads;
tool is rotated instead of workpiece
drilling must be done first
