An NSAID that is available as an 81 mg dose and 324 mg dose. Unlike other NSAIDs, it is also used to reduce platelet aggregation in cases of a heart attack or stroke.
Aspirin
An oral antihistamine that reduces swelling in response to an allergic reaction
Benadryl
A “blood thinner” taken regularly by patients with a hx or risk of forming blood clots (DVT/ PE/ stroke/ afib) to prevent the risk of a future event. The “thinness” of blood is measured every other week with the INR lab test, as too much of this drug may predispose a person to bleed easily and excessively
Warfarin (Coumadin)
A (thiazide) diuretic used to treat HTN
Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ)
An NSAID, which acts to reduce pain and inflammation
Ibuprofen
The hormone that acts to lower blood sugars and is used to treat hyperglycemia in those with type 1 and type II diabetes mellitus. There are two major types: fast-acting (taken with meals) and slow-acting (taken in the morning)
Insulin
A (loop) diuretic used to treat CHF
Lasix
An ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitor that treats high blood pressure
Lisinopril
The first line medication used to treat type II diabetes, which acts by increasing a persons’s sensitivity to insulin
Metfofmin
The most common beta blocker, a class of medications that reduces blood pressure and slows heart rate most commonly for HTN and CHF
Metoprolol
A stool softener taken to relieve constipation
Miralax
A medication that ANtagonizes NARCotics, and is used to correct for narcotic overdose.
Narcan
The sublingual medication used to dilate blood vessels in the case of a heart attack
Nitroglycerin
A medication that alleviates chronic heartburn by reducing the secretion of gastric acid; it does not immediately relieve sx of heartburn (GERD)
Omeprazole (Prilosec)
The most common medication used to alleviate nausea
Ondansetron (Zofran)
The most common of the steroids (glucocorticoids), which help to reduce inflammation (e.g. with bronchitis, COPD, etc.)
Prednisone
The narcotics, by order of increasing strength:
- Morphine -often used by EMS
- Hydrocodone
- Oxycodone
- Hydromorphone (Dilaudid) -the most potent long-acting narcotic available in both oral and IV forms
- Sublimaze (Fentanyl) -used for procedures, as it is very short-acting
An analgesic and antipyretic (fever reducer)
Tylenol
