Common Lathe Operations Flashcards
What is turning?
The tool is fed linearly in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation to reduce the diameter of the workpiece
Is turning an external operation?
Yes
Is facing an external operation?
Yes
What is facing?
The tool is fed radially into the rotating workpiece on one end to create a flat surface.
2 points
What is threading?
- A pointed tool is fed linearly, parallel to the axis of rotation, across the outside of the surface of the rotating workpiece.
- The feedrate is significantly faster to produce a spiral thread around the workpiece.
What is grooving?
A straight edged tool is fed radially into the rotating workpiece to a specified depth.
What is parting/cutoff?
- Similar to grooving, a tool is fed radially into the rotating workpiece to the centre of the workpiece to cut of the part at a specific length.
- After parting, the newly cut surface, on the part’s end should be worked on (e.g. Facing to get a better surface finish.)
What is drilling?
The tool, a drill bit, is fed into the centre of the rotating workpiece on one end to create a hole to a required depth. The drill bit is mounted on the tailstock.
What is reaming?
The tool mounted on the tailstock, a reamer, is fed into the centre of the rotating workpiece on one end to create a hole with a specific surface finish, size and tolerance, to a required depth.
Drilling must be done prior to Reaming.
What is tapping?
A tapping tool is used to cut the surface of the hole to create internal threads. In this operation, the tool is rotated instead of the workpiece. A hole must be drilled before tapping can be done. The diameter of the hold depends on the tap size to be used.
What must be done before boring?
Drilling
What must be done before tapping?
A drilled hole.
What must be done before reaming?
Drilling
Must drilling be done before tapping, reaming and boring?
Yes.
