Common Descriptive Ultrasound Nomenclature Flashcards
Reduced acoustic signal amplitude in or returning from regions lying beyond an attenuating object.
Acoustic Shadow
Property of being echo free or without echoes.
Anechoic
An apparent echo for which distance, direction, or amplitude does not correspond to a real target.
Artifacts
Amplitude reduction of an acoustic signal.
Attenuation
Acoustic signal received.
Echo
Describes properties of a structure that produces echoes.
Echogenic
Echoes of higher amplitude and/or density than normal for the surrounding medium.
Hyperechoic
Echoes of lower amplitude and/or density than normal for the surrounding medium.
Hypoechoic
Applied to medical ultrasound, the term “sonar” is the generic term for Echo Ranging Acronym from Sound Navigation Ranging.
Sonar
The study of using sound waves for medical applications.
Sonography
The recording of sound with a graphical representation of the subject.
Sonogram
Individual who utilizes medical ultrasound with competency to produce images.
Sonographer
The individual who utilizes medical ultrasound and interprets the images. Refers to the physician.
Sonologist
A misnomer for anechoic with low absorption.
Sonolucent
Process of imaging by transmitting the sound field through the specimen and receiving the transmitted energy on the far surface.
Through Transmission
