Common And Decimal Fractions Flashcards
What’s a proper fraction?
A fraction where the numerator (top number) is less than the denominator (bottom number).
Example: ½
What’s an improper fraction?
A fraction where the numerator (top number) is bigger than the denominator (bottom number).
Example: 5/3
What is a common fraction?
Common fractions are fractions where both the numerator and denominator are whole numbers written as a/b.
What are decimal fractions?
Decimal fractions can have a whole number as well as a fractional part, separated by a comma. The whole number is always on the left of the comma and the fractional part is always on the right of the comma.
Example: 250,27
What’s a mixed number?
A mixed number is number consisting of a whole number and a fraction.
Example: 9 3/4
What are equivalent fractions?
Fractions with the same value.
Give an equivalent fraction of 5/10.
½; 2/4; 4/8; 6/12; 7/14; 8/16; 9/18; 10/20…etc.
Give an equivalent fraction for 9/24.
3/8; 6/16; 18/48…etc.
Give an equivalent fraction for 3/4.
6/8; 12/16; 75/100…etc.
What is the lowest common denominator?
The lowest common denominator is the lowest common multiple of two denominators. You must find the lowest equivalent fraction that apply to both fractions.
Example: The lowest common denominator of 45/75 and 6/10 is 3/5.
What’s 1/2+1/4?
3/4
What’s 3/4-3/8?

Frypan has 3/4 of Oreo mug cake left. He wants to give Ella and Newt each an equal piece of what’s left for their date.
How much will they each get?
3/4 ÷ 2 = 3/8
Newt and Ella each get 3/8 Oreo mug cake.
What do you have to do when multiplying two fractions?
You multiply the numerators together and the denominators together.
-If it’s a mixed number write it as an improper fraction before multiplying.
(Yes!!! Literally the only simple thing we have to do in maths! I nearly had a breakdown trying to remember how to do this; whether you had to convert to decimals or what, by no! Yay!!! It’s so simple!)
Peeta only has enough flour to make 3/4 of his dough recipe for orange bagels-but not orange like Effie’s hair, more like the sunset. His dough recipe makes 15 and 1/2 bagels using 3/4 measurements. If Peeta for some reason felt like multiplying these two numbers together, what answer would he get?
3/4 x 31/2 = 93/8
