Comments on ligaments of the knee joint Flashcards
Knee joint capsule
Is fibrous, weak; flexion, extension, some gliding and medial rotation
Tibial collateral
Limits extension and abduction of the leg; attached to medial meniscus
Fibular collateral
Limits extension and adduction of leg, overlies popliteal tendon
Patellar
Acts in extension of quadriceps tendon
Arcuate popliteal
Passes over popliteus muscle
Oblique popliteal
Limits hyperextension and lateral rotation
Medial meniscus
Is semicircular; acts as a cushion, often torn
Lateral meniscus
Is more circular and smaller than medial meniscus; acts as cushion
Anterior cruciate
Prevents posterior slipping of femur on tibia; torn in hyperextension
Posterior cruciate
Prevents anterior slipping of femur on tibia; shorter and stronger than anterior cruciate
Transverse
Beds and stabilises menisci
Posterior meniscofemoral
Is strong
Quadriceps tendon
Is part of extension mechanism
Patellar
Acts in extension of quadriceps tendon, patella stabilised by medial and lateral ligament, attachment of tibia and femur
