SCMS Basic Comma Rules
Comma Rule #1
Items in a series:
Separate three or more items in a series with commas.
Comma Rule #2
Independent clauses:
Separate independent clauses with a comma and FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)
Comma Rule #3
Conventions:
Use with commas with standard conventions such as greetings in letters, street addresses, and date, (Remember: If you need a comma IN the convention, you also need a comma after it IF it’s in the middle of a sentence!)

Extra information:
Use commas to set off information in a sentence such as appositives (synonyms that re-name or say again) or extra descriptions.

Introductory elements:
Use commas to separate introductory words, phrases, and/or clauses from the rest of the sentence.
Comma Rule #6
Separating adjectives:
Use commas to separate adjectives when you can imagine the word “AND” inserted between them, and it makes sense.
