How do you define research?
Asking questions and finding answers.
What is social science?
Understanding how human interactions function and create relationships.
What symbols are used in social sciences?
language, body language, waving, an object, or actions
What is humanities research?
making meaning of human interactions in a meaningful way ex. art, music, poetry, literature, etc
What is critical/cultural research?
learning how we communicate with others by looking at the systems in place that abuse their power in order to control marginalized groups. People in power strive to keep the culture in place
What is epistemology?
the study of knowledge. Understanding how the world works from a new perspective rather than limited to your own experiences
Experiences of Epistemology
how we make sense of the world through our own experiences
Authority of Epistemology
one authority’s experience is not the same as other authority figures. do you trust what people in charge tell you?
Tenacity of Epistemology
assuming that everything you know to be true is true
A Priori
we have always believed something to be true, so it is correct
Mysticism/Magic/Superstition (similar to Intuition/Hunches)
things we can’t explain but just seem to happen and keeps on happening
Traditions/Customs/Faith
we are doing it this way because it has always happened this way. since our grandparents and parents did it, this is how things are done.
What are limitations to everyday ways of knowing?
knowledge is limited to our own beliefs, experiences, language, and biases.
What is communication research?
studying human interaction through questioning, observing, measuring, and operating in order to improve the human condition with scholarly, applied, and proprietary research
What is the difference between social/humanities research and critical/cultural research?
Within all the research methods you have to observe, research, report what happened, and describe how you felt. But critical/cultural research goes further by questioning and gaining an understanding of the research by intervening
