Comic Devices Flashcards
Farce
exaggerated characters in an improbable situation
Absurdity
(often linked to incongruity) something completely ridiculous and improbable
Dramatic irony
we know something that the character(s) on stage don’t
Wit
Clever use of language that involves ingenuity, quick thinking and verbal skill to create comic repartee or banter; sometimes used to belittle or demean another
Slapstick
physical action-based comedy that often looks like it should involve physical injury
(violence) but actually does not (Tom & Jerry; Laurel & Hardy)
Rule of three
if it’s funny once, do it again only bigger, then once more but bigger still.
Duplication
– more than one of a character, object or action appear on stage
Parodyp
– copying and exaggerating certain characteristics of a person (imitation or mimicry)
Inversion
reversal or swapping of actions
Juxtaposition
two actions or scenes that are funny because of the strong contrast between them
Comic stop
Is a sudden and unexpected change in action; an extreme physical reaction that shows
the character losing control of their body and balance.
Double Take

Reversal
a sudden change in pace / rhythm
Surprise
an unexpected action or reaction
Repetition of action
using the rule of 3 or repeating to become absurd
