What is conformity?
A change in a person’s behaviour as a result of real or imagined pressure from a person or group of people
Types of conformity-
What is compliance?
Individuals ‘going along with others’ in public, but privately not changing personal opinions of behaviour

What is identification?
Conforming to the opinions/behaviours of others because there is something about that group we value

What is internalisation?
When a person genuinely accepts the groups norms. This results in a private and public change of opinions/behaviour

Normative social influence

What is Normative social influence?
A person conforms because of their need to be accepted by the group, wanting to fit in

What is informational social influence?
A person is unsure how to behave, or unclear as to what they feel about an issue
They want to be correct
Common in ambiguous or new situations- group is used as a source of information
Often leads to internalisation
