Describe the tail of a comet.

A

Points away from sun. Two types:

  • Straight ion tail (Blue coloured, Fluorescence, Ionised carbon monoxide, Ionised by solar wind)
  • Dust Tail (Lighter coloured, Broader, Curvier, Produced by radiation pressures pushing particles out of the nucleus, Reflects sunlight)

Originate fro Ort Cloud.

e.g. Hale-Bopp.

A

They can be a dramatic increase in the number of meteors observed when the earth passes through a meteoroid stream left by a comet.

What causes meteors to appear as light streaks in the sky?

A
  • When a Meteoroid enters the earth’s atmosphere it becomes a meteor.
  • Friction between a meteor and the surrounding air produce heat and light and can be seen as light streaks in the night sky.

Why do we need to monitor PHO’s?

A

An impact would have catastrophic consequences for life on Earth (especially if the PHO’s are larger than 1km)
