combustion of hydrocarbons Flashcards
1
Q
Recap:
flammability and boiling points
describe:
short chain hydrocarbons
A
Short chain hydrocarbons are highly flammable and have low boiling points.
As the hydrocarbon molecules get larger they become less flammable and the boiling point increases
have a low viscosity flow quicker
2
Q
examples of hydrocarbons being used as fuels:
A
ships
planes
cars
3
Q
what happens when hydrocarbons are combusted? (4 marks)
what is this whole process called when done?
A
they release energy.
The carbon and hydrogen atoms in the fuel react with oxygen.
The carbon and hydrogen are oxidised.
If oxygen is unlimited, reaction produces carbon dioxide and water
complete combustion
