Combustion of alkanes Flashcards
What does complete combustion produce?
Carbon dioxide and water
What does incomplete combustion produce?
Carbon monoxide and water
What are the harmful effects of combustion?
The internal combustion engine produces impurities such as nitrous oxides, unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide
Flue gases (gases that come out of chimneys) contain sulphur dioxide which causes acid rain or air pollution
Why are nitrous oxides harmful?
They can react to form ozone at ground level which irritates eyes and causes lung damage
How can sulfur dioxide be removed, include the equation.
Sulfur dioxide can be removed by reacting it with calcium carbonate or calcium oxide because sulfur dioxide is acidic and calcium oxide is basic.
CaO + SO2 -> CaSO3
How can unburned hydrocarbons and nitrous oxides be removed?
By catalytic convertors.
