Combustion Flashcards
What is complete combustion?
When an alkane is burnt in enough/excess oxygen. CO2 and H2O are products
What is incomplete combustion?
When an alkane is burnt without enough oxygen. CO and soot (carbon) are the products
What are the effects of incomplete combustion
CO and soot produced.
CO - kills people because it’s toxic
Soot - causes global dimming and breathing problems
What is a catalytic converter?
A part in a car’s exhaust that is designed to reduced pollutants caused by burning fuels. Used to remove toxic gases NO & CO that are produced when the fuel burns in the engines
How does a catalytic converter work?
It is mounted on a ceramic honeycomb so greater surface area = faster rate of reaction =more gases are removed.
Range of metals used at catalyst (e.g Pt/Pd/Rh/Ir/
What is the equation for catalytic converter
2CO + 2NO —-> 2CO2 + N2
