Combustion Flashcards
What is a hydrocarbon?
A molecule/compound which contains only the elements carbon and hydrogen chemically bonded together
Can hydrocarbons have a different number of carbon atoms?
Yes
What is one of the main sources of hydrocarbons and what is it a mixture of?
Crude oil: is a mixture of different hydrocarbons and small amounts of other substances
What are some uses for hydrocarbons?
Fuels, materials for the production of plastics etc
What is combustion?
A type of chemical reaction between hydrocarbons and oxygen
What are the conditions required for combustion to occur?
There must be fuel to burn, air to supply oxygen and heat to start and continue the combustion process.
What does the combustion of a hydrocarbon in a plentiful supply of oxygen produce?
Carbon dioxide and water only
How do you test for water?
Put the substance in a sample of copper sulphate. If it turns blue, water is present
How do you test for carbon dioxide?
Bubble the solution through limewater, if the limewater turns milky or cloudy white, carbon dioxide is present
